TINY HOMES
Competition | Chicago, 2016
This competition, held in Chicago, aimed to develop a prototype for affordable housing units for those in need. This project was a collaboration with my great friend Dzhel Gemedzhi.
SPACE: The project is designed to provide three levels of privacy: individual space (private module), communal space (a semi-private communal square for socializing, festivals, and community dinners), and public space. The communal area is enclosed by the modules with controlled accessibility, while the outer parts of the site remain open to public activities such as gardening and recreation.
FORM: The "classic" pitched roof profile is extruded along the east-west axis of the urban fabric, referencing the "shotgun" housing typology. The middle of the extrusion forms a courtyard, while the southern-facing slope of the roof is lifted to allow natural, diffused light to enter the interior.
MATERIALITY: Recycled wood, with its weathered texture and rich patina, seamlessly integrates into the neighborhood's historic fabric.
INTERIOR: The design emphasizes simplicity and formal cleanliness. Functional elements such as the bed, desk, dining table, and storage are built-in and concealed within the walls, enhancing spatial flexibility, versatility, and aesthetic harmony.
