Union Terminal
Speculative Project | Cincinnati, Ohio, 2011
Built in 1933, Union Terminal in Cincinnati served as a major transportation hub. However, as public transportation demand declined, its primary function was abandoned. The construction of the I-75 highway further isolated the terminal from nearby neighborhoods. Over the years, the building underwent several unsuccessful adaptations before being repurposed as the Cincinnati Museum Center.
This project envisions a sustainable future for Union Terminal. It proposes restoring and expanding its original transportation function, reconnecting the terminal plaza with surrounding neighborhoods for improved accessibility, and reviving the concourse that once spanned above the railroad tracks. To accommodate both the railway station concourse and the Museum Center’s gallery extension, the new concourse is designed as two separate sections.
